*Art History - "At Home in Antiquity" by Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema. Sir Lawrence was a Dutch artist that was granted special British denizenship. He trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium and settled in England. His style was considered romantic Academicism. Similar to Maxfield Parrish, he painted figures in gowns or togas with dynamic expressions telling a story. He mixed up textures by painting fabric, skin tones, stone, ocean and sky. Unlike Parrish he used realistic colors.
His art was introduced to by my brother. It's important to study the past in order to mature and add to your technique. If all you do is one thing or use other artists work to inspire you, your art becomes one dimensional. No one says anything but established artists notice and take note. Young artists and amateurs think it's okay and do the same. That's why I tell up and coming artists to take their own reference shots and create their own compositions. Copying is easy, creating is hard. That's why artists get blocked. Without training, imagination and experience, the first instinct is to look at the other guy. And how is that creative? #beyourself #paintyourpassion #beoriginal #alwaysaloha #arthistory #almatadema #academicism #dutchartist #classical #artwork #romantic #becreative
